Different schools and districts have different state standards.
While this program was not written to intentionally match with the five CASEL competencies - it actually aligns seamlessly.
The Social Emotional Learning Notebook series is likely best for schools and organizations that have state or local SEL standards to follow.
The Live Growth Focused books are likely best for schools and districts without written SEL standards and who still want to teach students to believe in themselves by developing growth mindsets.

🚫 No Hidden Agendas
Because this program was designed with students, it includes topics which matter to them: school, friendships, technology, teams, families, goal-setting, and individual self-growth. That's it.
If it's in the news, it's not in this book, simply because they never mentioned it. -
👥 Designed with Students
Read student reflections hereOver a dozen student reflections are incorporated within each book - so students will be learning from the experiences and reflections of other growth-minded students.
-
🏫 District-wide Programming
This program is fully-aligned for schools or districts who want to implement it across grade levels. Each corresponding chapter discusses the same content in an age-appropriate way. For example, chapter 3 is about school in all books; chapter 5 is about technology in all books allowing for aligned implementation.
-
⏱️ Simple Implementation
See the Launchbook hereAs a fellow educator, I wanted to create something that could be implemented in the classroom in under 5 minutes with no lesson planning- this can. Just open the Google Slideshow, read the chapter summary to yourself, and press play. For administrators, there is a digital launchbook with sample letters to stakeholders, timelines, and lesson plans.
-
🧠 CASEL-Aligned
View the Crosswalk hereThough not intended, the topics which matter to students seamlessly align with the five CASEL Competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
-
💰 Funding-Friendly
This program was created and tested successfully in a Title I environment. As it supports SEL and MTSS priorities as an instructional resource, it could be eligible for Title I, Title III, and other federal/state funding. Better yet, it is written by a teacher, not a corporation, meaning little overhead, and big savings for you!

The Beginning Reader edition uses social stories to help beginning readers excel in life. Social stories use “I” in the sentences to help students repeat, practice, and learn the content. A note for grown-ups is located in the beginning of the book with suggestions on using social stories for growth.
This book could be used in Preschool, Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade classrooms to inspire beginning learners to develop a growth mindset.
The Doc Chelle and Teddy series can be viewed in classes, and teachers and families can reinforce the sentences as students color the related pages.

Creating Growth Focused Classrooms:
Reflections and Strategies from a Teacher covers a collection of topics to help K-12 educators and administrators create a culture of growth.
Topics include mindset, testing, grading, logistics, rigor, communication, activities, and connections.
The goal of this book is to help educators find a few little tweaks to their current instruction to make their work slightly more effective - and perhaps easier in the long run. This is not a universal program design where everyone does everything exactly the same - rather it is a collection of reflections and strategies for individual teachers to discover what could work for them.
Actual examples and reflections from students are included (you can see most of them here). There are no supplemental materials for this book.

The Growth Mindset Journey
-
2015-2016
In 2015-2016, Dr. Ihrig served as a middle school math intervention teacher in an upper-middle class school in Connecticut.
During her time at the school, she named the resource room the "Innovative Math Lab." Students could freely come and go, and students were required to write their goal or focus for each time they visited.
Additionally, Dr. Ihrig partnered with math teachers for students to set explicit targets for growth as measured through utilizing Moby Max (pages 76-79 in Creating Growth Focused Classrooms).
Dr. Ihrig also created themed programs, such as February=Fractions for students to challenge themselves and improve on specific skills. -
Fall 2016
Dr. Ihrig started explicitly teaching students about growth mindset while working at a high school in Connecticut.
In one of her classes, over 40% of students were taking math for the first time in English. The theme of the classes was: "Nosotros Crecemos. We Grow."
Students embraced growth mindset and implemented the themes in their own lives. This is when Dr. Ihrig realized that students needed to learn how possessing a growth mindset can benefit young people in and out of the classroom. -
2017-2018
Dr. Ihrig continued teaching students about growth mindset during her years at a Title I school in Georgia.
She started working at the school at the end of Semester 1. During Semester 2, she consistently encouraged teens to set goals and write steps to achieve their goals.
To prepare for the state test, Dr. Ihrig hosted large review sessions in the high school cafeteria which were open to all learners. Sessions often exceeded over 100 students.
It was after this year that Dr. Ihrig realized a comprehensive program to help students recognize the greatness inside of them was critical for consistent success.
During Summer 2018, Dr. Ihrig began developing the program. -
2018-2019
Dr. Ihrig's students during the 2018-2019 school year were the first group of students to experience the program. At first, it was only intended for her learners; however her students encouraged her to turn the concepts into a book. As she developed chapters, she provided the chapters to her students to read, implement in their lives, and offer suggestions for improvement. Most of her students embraced using a growth mindset wholeheartedly.
-
April 2019-December 2020
In 2019, Dr. Ihrig published her first book on the topic. The first cover included pictures of teens doing their best. The tagline, "Chase Your Dreams," was recommended by one of Dr. Ihrig's students. The content was very similar to the current books; however there were few reflection questions or action steps. Also...there were no images or places to doodle.
A few of Dr. Ihrig's colleagues tested several of the chapters (namely those on academics, poisonous drama, and technology) with their students. Dr. Ihrig also used the concepts in Chapter 3 while working with teens who voluntarily enrolled in her free SAT prep course. See their data here.
After insight from some of her students about formatting for the inside, Dr. Ihrig published the copy with a brain on the cover to match the character which appears occasionally throughout the book. Let's just say only the polite students liked that cover.
Eventually, Dr. Ihrig hired a few designers who created the subsequent covers. Dr. Ihrig also hired several translators to translate the books into Spanish. -
January 2021
In January 2021, Dr. Ihrig realized it was time for a name change and additional books to reach multiple age groups. The original Kids edition was too difficult for the target age group and became the Tween edition. Dr. Ihrig then wrote a new kids edition.
Considering her niece and nephew who were PreK and 1st graders at the time, Dr. Ihrig knew she wanted to add a preschooler and young kid option which included the pictures to color as well as sentences which could be stand alone and teach the same concepts. Her background with working with students with autism and other learning needs led to the creation of the Someone Special/Exceptional Learner edition.
Throughout the writing process, Dr. Ihrig was adamant that the chapters all align... for example, Chapter 3 is about school and academics and Chapter 7 is about grown-ups in all editions. This would allow a school district, group, or family to implement the program across ages, and all children would receive the same content, at the same time, in a way best for them. -
July 2021
In Summer 2021, Dr. Ihrig wanted to support students and schools with the social and emotional aspect of the transition from a virtual/hybrid environment to traditional instruction.
Although not written to be a social emotional learning program, there are aspects of Live Growth Focused that support the tenets of SEL.
In July 2021, the original books were rebranded and a CASEL Crosswalk was created to show alignment between Live Growth Focused and SEL for those districts that were looking for a program with a (loose) connection to social-emotional learning. -
Fall 2021
When presenting the program to a team of stakeholders, one person asked if the Teen version would be appropriate for 17-year-olds. As a result, Dr. Ihrig wrote the Young Adult edition which focuses on the transition from high school to young adult life.
A parent asked which book would be appropriate for adults. As a result, Dr. Ihrig wrote the Grown-Up version. The Grown-Up version is for parents, educators, mentors, coaches, families, and more... any one who interacts with a young person. -
June 2022
After some wisdom from a colleague, Dr. Ihrig decided to return to the original goal: helping young people to excel in life with a growth mindset.
First, the How to Growth Mindset books returned to the original title: Live Growth Focused.
Next, the font in all the Live Growth Focused books was changed to Verdana, an easy-to-read font for students learning English and those with learning disabilities.
Finally, the PreK, Preschooler, and Young Kid books were combined to become the Beginning Reader edition. Further, some images were changed in the Exceptional Learner book to include those students in wheelchairs. -
July 2022
For several years, some of Dr. Ihrig's colleagues asked for specifics about how to create growth-focused classrooms. They wanted something different than how to help students develop a growth mindset in their lives... instead, they asked for what actions can an educator take to help students to develop a growth mindset in the classroom.
Creating Growth Focused Classrooms: Reflections and Strategies from a Teacher covers a collection of topics to help K-12 educators and administrators create a culture of growth. Topics include mindset, testing, grading, logistics, rigor, communication, activities, and connections. Actual examples and reflections from students are included.
The Data Says It All

High School Math Implementation: ELL, SPED, CORE, GIFTED STUDENTS
Dr. Ihrig started the intentional teaching of growth mindset in Fall 2016. Students completed the STAR Math diagnostic at the start of the semester, then set goals for the mid-year assessment.

2018-2020 Demographics
The data chart to the left represents the demographics of the school for both the Live Growth Focused/SEL Program as well as the PSAT/SAT program that follows in the next two sections.
The PSAT/SAT program focused on growth mindset, goal-setting, and Khan Academy. Much of the current Dr. Test Prep YouTube channel reflects the same values and instruction (with the added bonus of the Desmos calculator). -

County-Wide Performance Awards: Dr. Ihrig's Title I Data
For the 2018-2019 school year, when Dr. Ihrig piloted the growth mindset program with all of her students, her school district implemented performance based awards.
The district determined Student Growth by taking the pretest scores for students in a course and determining quartiles. A teacher's Student Growth score is the percent of students who demonstrated more growth than the median within the respective quartile.(More info starts at pg. 3 here.)
Dr. Ihrig's students were geometry students and were compared with approximately 6,000 students district-wide. 72.48% of her students demonstrated more growth than the median for their quartile. This growth helped her to earn a weighted score of 85.84. The cutoff for the top 10% of performing teachers in the COUNTY was 82.54; thus, Dr. Ihrig and her students performed 3.3 points above the county cutoff.
Dr. Ihrig and her students were the highest performing combination at her high school as Dr. Ihrig was the only Category 1 recipient at her school. The cutoff score for the top 10% performing teachers at her school was 74.48; thus, Dr. Ihrig and her students were 11.4 points higher than the top 10% cutoff at her school.
There is NO question in Dr. Ihrig's mind that her students performed so well compared to their peers at their high school and their comparison group district-wide because of the time she invested in helping her students to believe in themselves by developing a growth mindset. Once they believed in themselves, they were unstoppable. -
-
Title I High School Implementation - Free, Voluntary SAT Prep Program
SAT Prep was a voluntary, FREE program that Dr. Ihrig created at the request of her former students.
From January 2020-March 2020 over 150 students participated in the program for at least one session. Sixty students were ready to take the March test which was canceled due to COVID; the remaining were preparing to take the May administration (also canceled).
In 2020-2021, over 300 students participated with 200 students choosing to take the test.
Note:while the state, district, and school all experienced decreases in SAT participation and increases in test scores between the 2019/20 and 2020/21 administrations, the Title I school experienced only at 14% decrease in SAT participation with the county and state experiencing an 32% and 31% decrease in participation, respectively.
Students who were not required to take the SAT still chose to study and take the SAT at a higher rate than both the county and the state. -
Note: in the 2021-2022 school year, Dr. Ihrig transferred to another high school, and the SAT Prep program (which also focused on growth mindset) was not implemented - potentially leading to a drop in scores. Also to note, every setting saw about a 70 point drop from 2020-2021 to 2021-2022; however, the county, state, and country saw an increase in participation, while this Title I school saw a decrease in participation.
Inspiring students to believe in themselves by developing a growth mindset... matters. It encourages them to show up, try, and give their best. It makes them unstoppable.
